Floods

A flood happens when water overflows onto land that is typically dry. It can be triggered by heavy rainfall, coastal storms, rapid snowmelt, or the failure of water control structures like dams or levees. Human actions, such as removing vegetation and paving surfaces, can also lead to floods by preventing water from being absorbed into the ground [1].

Floods have the potential to cause significant harm to buildings, homes, and infrastructure, as well as trigger landslides, debris flows, and other secondary hazards. Therefore, it is essential to be prepared for floods in case they happen.

Common types of floods include flash floods, river floods, and coastal floods. Flash floods occur when there is a sudden and intense rainfall that causes water to rise rapidly in a brief period. River floods occur when a river or stream overflows its banks due to extended rainfall or melting snow. Coastal floods happen when a storm surge or high tide causes water to overflow onto coastal areas [2].

Floods can be dangerous and destructive, so it’s crucial to take precautions to protect yourself and your property. Some preparations you can make include developing an emergency plan, preparing an emergency kit, securing your belongings, and staying informed about flood warnings and advisories.
