Tornado Preparedness

Preparedness involves a planning and equipping before a Tornado occurs.

Tornadoes are unpredictable and can cause significant damage to property and lives. That’s why it’s important to understand what tornadoes are and how to prepare for them. The content in this section will discuss how to stay safe during tornado season by understanding tornadoes and creating a tornado emergency kit.

Understanding Tornadoes Tornadoes are violent air columns that can cause destruction in their path. They form from thunderstorms and are most common in the United States. To understand tornadoes, it’s important to know the signs of a tornado, such as dark, greenish skies, large hail, and a loud roar similar to a freight train. When a tornado warning is issued, it’s crucial to go to a safe place, such as the basement or an interior room without windows. Stay away from windows and doors and protect your head with a helmet or pillow in case of flying debris.

Creating a Tornado Emergency Kit Preparing for a tornado involves creating a tornado emergency kit. The kit should include essential items such as a first aid kit, non-perishable food and water, a flashlight with extra batteries, a whistle to signal for help, and a portable radio to receive emergency information. Additionally, it’s important to know the area’s tornado risk and sign up for the community’s warning system. After the tornado, avoid fallen power lines and broken utility lines and wear appropriate gear during clean-up.

By understanding tornadoes and creating a tornado emergency kit, you can stay safe during tornado season. Remember to always take tornado warnings seriously and seek shelter immediately.
